Some interesting social media people

If you're interested in finding out what this whole "social media" thing is, here are a few people who have been very successful with the entire idea:

First, the guy who started Tuttle, Lloyd Davis. We've already linked to him once before, but he deserves it again. :-) You can follow him as LloydDavis on Twitter.

Next, the man who first introduced me to these concepts in a codified sense, Andrew Dubber. He's a kiwi who has been transplanted to Birmingham, England, and teaches at Birmingham City University. He specializes in helping musicians find their way in an Internet world. He is known as dubber on Twitter.

One man who has found great success as a musician working on the Internet is Steve Lawson. He is also in Birmingham, England, but unlike Andrew, has the distinction of actually being from there. He is a solo bass player who once toured with Howard Jones. He and his wife, Lobelia, through the power of Twitter and social media alone, toured the US and Europe through a series of house concerts, and came out not only intact, but profitable. His Twitter handle is solobasssteve, and his wife is lobelia.

I'd also like to give a shout-out to Geoffrey Hickman, who runs Tuttle LA and encouraged me to start the group here in Port Huron. Thank you, Geoff! You can find him on Twitter as geoffsays.

Finally, here is one marketer-type who has really embraced social media and knows probably more about it than anyone else I've found so far. There's nothing I can write about Chris Brogan that will really do him any justice, so I'll let his accomplishments and personality speak for themselves. He goes by the straightforward handle of chrisbrogan on Twitter.

This list is woefully incomplete, and consists only of people who have directly influenced me in some fashion. Nevertheless, they are a great starting point to understanding this new and interesting shift in doing business with the world.

Tuttle is named for Harry Tuttle, the freelance plumber from the cult movie "Brazil", whose independent activities were illegal in the surreal Orwellian world of the film. It was started in England by Lloyd Davis as a way for people interested in this new world of social media and the Internet to get together and share ideas.

The meme has been spreading, with groups forming throughout the UK and America. This blog represents my attempt to start a group for the humble Great Lake town of Port Huron, in Michigan. If you're on Twitter, I use the #tuttleph hash tag to mark posts relevant to this project. If you'd like, you can also follow me. I'm dmlandrum on Twitter.

As this bad economy wears on, it has become apparent how important networking and social media sites like Twitter have become to people needing to find work or new customers. It's my opinion that what we're seeing is only the beginning, and before too long, groups like Tuttle will be springing up all over the world.
